Extractive distillation is a specialized chemical engineering technique employed to separate liquid mixtures consisting of components with similar boiling points, especially when they form azeotropes. Azeotropes are mixtures that boil at a constant temperature and have the same composition in vapor and liquid phases; thus, they are not amenable to fractional distillation. In this case, an entertainer, a high-boiling-point solvent, is added to the mixture. This solvent selectivity combines with one or more component’s volatilities.

This involves feeding the mixture along with the solvent into the distillation column. The solvent modifies the vapor-liquid equilibrium, allowing for the separation of components that could not be separated using normal types of distillation. The desired components are separated within the distillation column, so most volatile ones leave from the top. In contrast, less volatile ones, together with solvent, can be collected from the bottom part. Subsequently, this enables the recycling of solvents back into the process.

The above choice should have a high boiling point and low volatility besides selective interaction with certain compounds without forming them as azeotropes.
